Contributor Friday January 4, 2008Phil O'Donnell tribute
As the sporting world still comes to terms with the tragic death of Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell, tributes continue to flood in. On January 19, the club play their first match since O'Donnell collapsed during his side's 5-3 win over Dundee United on December 29. The players who watched in horror, including O'Donnell's nephew David Clarkson, will go out and try to win a football match against St Mirren. It'll be the last thing on their mind, but sooner or later life has to go on. How will Motherwell remember their hero that day? I'd like to see Mark McGhee start that game with 10 men. I'd like to see O'Donnell represented on the pitch in the form of his shirt or a photograph near the centre spot. Whoever wins the toss, can kick off and run the ball out of play. O'Donnell's number 10 shirt or photo can then be removed from the pitch as fans play their final tribute to the man who cost £1.75m when he joined Celtic in the mid 1990s. It won't be easy for Motherwell to focus on getting back to winning games of football, but I'm sure O'Donnell would want nothing more than his beloved Motherwell side to mark his passing with a win. |
