Hogg hits Bridlington's decider in top of table battle

BRIDLINGTON Town beat Rainworth Miners' Welfare 1-0 in the top of the table battle.

However, the margin of victory could have been more, with Rainworth having to defend for the majority of the game.

Both sides vied for supremacy in the early stages and it was Bridlington who started to get territorial advantage.

Craig Hogg had an appeal for handball against James Whitehead turned down and Ash Allanson's finish was too high after he turned past Matt Draper.

Cameron Fearon picked up the first of seven bookings in a physical but not dirty encounter for a late challenge on Allanson.

Tom Fleming narrowly missed from 25 yards and then entered the referee's notebook along with Rainworth's Brendan Sweeney after an altercation between the two just before the half-hour mark.

Two minutes later came the deciding moment when Fleming played the ball forward to Hogg, who turned to hit his left foot shot beyond Mark Hales in the visitors' goal.

Town continued to take the game to their opponents who were forced into a substitution when Craig Charlesworth replaced Whitehead who had suffered an injury 10 minutes earlier.

Towler played a good ball to Hotte and from his centre Sweeney just got in just ahead of Wayne Wallace.

The lead should have been increased five minutes before the interval when Allanson's run took him past Hales and with the goal gaping Fearon was well placed to clear the midfielder's shot off the line.

Lewis Trimmer was cautioned for a challenge that left Allanson on the floor, although the referee decided to play an advantage before showing the yellow card.

Rainworth went on the attack at the start of the second half and Ant Lynam saw his 25-yard effort clear the bar.

After 54 minutes Rainworth made their second change with ex-Mansfield Town player Craig Mitchell coming on in place of Craig Wilson.

Hales ran out of goal to kick clear as Neil Towler chased a ball with Matt Baxter.

Hogg gained a corner on the left but the danger was averted when a free kick was given against Towler who went up for the ball as Hales flapped at Allanson's flag-kick.

Just after the hour Hogg gave way to Craig Burdick who was returning from a groin injury.

Matt Draper was the next entry in the referee's book for chopping Towler from behind and from the resultant free kick Baxter headed behind for a corner.

Rainworth gained their first corner after 68 minutes but Bridlington continued on the front foot and another good move between Allanson and Fleming finished with Hotte shooting narrowly wide with Hales rooted to the spot.

Towler was cautioned for kicking the ball away and Wallace followed him into the book for a foul on Naylor.

Both teams made substitutions with Rainworth bringing on Jermaine Hollis for Trimmer while Alex Rhodes replaced Phil Harrison.

Burdick played Rhodes clear on the right and Hales smartly turned his shot round the post. The goalkeeper was again in action when he came out to smother at the feet of Wallace and then saved a Burdick effort down to his left. Fleming and Burdick combined to give Towler a shooting chance but Draper got to the ball just in time.

Although Rainworth had improved in the second half they failed to severely test Mark Wilberforce in the Town goal.

Bridlington Town: Wilberforce, Harrison (Rhodes 76), Dexter, Allanson, Lee, Giblin, Hotte, Fleming, Towler (Brunton 89), Wallace, Hogg (Burdick 61).
