Hodgsons FC make bid to challenge for Premier Division title

Wednesday, March 03, 2010, 17:00

The final Saturday in February was almost wiped out by the weather with only three games played.

Three months of rain, snow and drainage problems have created a fixture crisis which will take co-operation from all involved when conditions, hopefully, will improve.

Premier Division

Hodgsons moved within two points of the league leaders and also have the luxury of a game in hand.

This match was the only game played in the County Premier League, due to the fact that Hodgsons moved it to the all weather 3G pitch at Longcroft School.

The previous encounter was only a couple of weeks back and it was a late equaliser by Holme Rovers that left Hodgsons very frustrated with 2-2 draw.

This seemed to get the team up for this match, and inside the first 25 minutes Hodgsons were 3-0 ahead due to a Scott-Jon Tyler hat-trick.

Hodgsons were playing with confidence, and Danny Cartwright was causing the away defence all sorts of trouble.

It was his skills on the ball that caused a Holme defender to foul him in the box and the referee awarded the Tanners a penalty.

Adam Foster stepped up and fired bottom right, the keeper guessed right and made a good save.

This was perhaps a turning point in the match as Holme Rovers pushed forward and deservedly scored to make it 3-1.

They then had the chance to make 3-2 from the penalty spot, but keeper Matt Dexter saved well to his right hand side.

The second half saw Hodgsons push forward for further goals, and it was Danny Cartwright who made it 4-1 with a cool finish after a great run.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men as Jolly Thorne received a straight red for an altercation with the Holme Rovers full-back.

Holme grabbed a second goal 10 minutes from the end.

But substitute Jordan Dexter scored a fifth for Hodgsons in the dying minutes, and perhaps the best of the bunch after great interplay by Danny Cartwright and Paul Silvester.

Danny Piwinski had another solid display at right full-back, and just missed out on the man of the match award which went to Scott-Jon Tyler.

On Saturday Hodgsons travel to Howden to face Howden Amateurs.

Hodgsons also welcome on board new signings Richard Rose and Wes Monterio from Trades and Labour.

Both players will add further strength and depth to the squad.

Division One

Park Athletic 6 Gilberdyke 4.

In a high scoring game Park Athletic took all three points with a 6-4 win over Gilberdyke.

Park are well placed to challenge AFC Rovers who have a game in hand and who have a slightly better goal difference and second placed Driffield Evening Inst.

Division Three

Waterloo 3 Skirlaugh 2

A close win over Skirlaugh gives Waterloo a four points lead over Wawne Ferry who have game in hand.

As can be seen competition is keen in the County League and club secretaries are reminded of the need to submit their results by card or, preferably e-mail, to keep our records as up to date as possible.
