Addinall on song as Lane Chalk up victory
Scoring the first goal in the game was probably the worst thing that Westella and Willerby could have done at the 3g against Chalk Lane as this galvanised the home team into action which saw them run out 8-1 winners.
The teams held a minute's silence before the game in memory of Kenny Patrick, who died on Friday and who had had a long association with Chalk Lane FC, having been involved from the Club's earliest days in the Hull Sunday Football League.
Westella took a surprise lead after the early exchanges, but two goals from Joe Addinall, the second of which was due to his alertness when he was the first to react after a Joel Mellors' shot rebounded off the post gave Chalk much- needed confidence.
Addinall was certainly on top of his game and this was evidenced with a superb volley following a cross from Gareth Sewell to complete his hat-trick.
Young Gary Mallinson in the Westella goal produced an excellent save from another Addinall effort, this time a close-range header from a cross from Neil Leckenby, but he could not keep out a header from captain Mike Smith which made the score 4-1.
By this time, Chalk were cruising and although Westella were well prompted in midfield by Richard Guthrie it was becoming a matter of how many the home side would clock up.
Addinall netted next with his fourth goal of the game after good work from Adam Wilberforce, who was returning from injury.
Wilberforce got his name on the score sheet with Westella having little resistance to the pace of Sewell, who continued to be the main provider.
Sewell laid on the next goal for Jordan Hunt who nipped in ahead of Addinall to make it 7-1.
Sewell went on to complete the scoring himself with a fine solo effort.
Hornsea Town 3 Hessle Rangers 3
Hornsea and Hessle played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in perfect conditions at Leconfield.
Hessle had three good chances to open the scoring, but failed to take their chances.
Hornsea showed how to finish when P. Skitt clinically fired home in the 17th minute with Hornsea's first shot on goal.
Things got better for Hornsea when Silvestri made it 2-0 in the 24th minute, leaving Hessle facing an uphill battle in a game they were competing well in, but were lacking the final finish.
Hessle's battling qualities were rewarded in the 43rd minute when Holmes finished from close range, after good work from Bird, who was proving a handful for the Hornsea defence.
Indeed it was Bird who completed Hessle's fight back when he sublimely chipped home right on the half- time whistle for 2-2.
Hornsea responded with a quick start to the second half, when they took the lead again through Adams, heading home from close range, when he reacted to the ball rebounding off the cross bar the quickest.
Hessle were fortunate goalkeeper Picken was able to make a couple of decent saves to deny Hornsea further success, ably assisted by a commanding performance by skipper Downing at the heart of the Hessle defence.
Hornsea keeper Dexter was also kept busy, especially saving well from Dales' thunderous shot which Dexter tipped over the bar.
Hessle levelled in the 70th minute, when Briggs scored at the far post following a corner kick.
Both sides were going for the win, with chances at either end, but on the day a 3-3 score line was a fair result for two sides that will be pleased with the football their playing and their respective starts to the season.
Sculcoates Amateurs 1 Malet Lambert YC 1
Malet came out on top in this bottom of the table clash with a flattering 4-0 score line.
Both sides fielded somewhat weakened sides with the emphasis being on youth.
Westella fielded a side of average age of 19 whilst Malet's was just over 21.
Once again Malet were indebted to veteran goalkeeper Phil Hawksworth who came in for the injured Dave Constable and again keeping a clean sheet.
In contrast, the Westella keeper was 16- year-old Gary Mallinson who had a fine game but was unlucky to concede two late goals which marred his debut.
Both sides strove hard to play good football in the windswept and rainy conditions with Malet failing to take advantage of the strong wind on their backs until the 40th minute when Paul Burton fired in a blistering shot which Mallinson did well to parry only for Simon Spencer to follow up and head home the loose ball.
In the 45th minute 17- year-old Matt Wilson extended Malet's lead when put through by the impressive Brad McKay and produced a glorious finish to give Malet a 2-0 half-time lead.
In the second half Westella also found the strong swirling wind at their backs difficult to take advantage of and although they had plenty of possession could not make the break through.
The turning point came in the 80th minute when keeper Hawksworth bravely saved at the feet of a Westella forward who seemed certain to score.
Skipper Spencer, who had led by example, scored his second goal to give Malet the much- needed points before 17-year-old sub Luke Beeston scored his first Humber Premier goal in the final minute.
Bradley McKay was outstanding for Malet with his energetic bursts and clever prompting made several good openings for his team mates.
St Andrews 2 North Ferriby United Res 3
St. Andrews produced a much-improved performance with much good passing and movement off the ball.
Ferriby used the long ball and tried to break up the home side's play, creating too many stoppages in play.
However, St. Andrews did produce the breakthrough they were seeking when Leng gave them the lead.
North Ferriby looked for an equaliser and found it 20 minutes later to make it all square again at the break.
Ferriby took the lead in the second period and St. Andrews cancelled out the advantage from a free kick just outside the box, with five minutes left.
Ferriby grabbed the winner in the last minute to take maximum points.
Division One
Bransholme Athletic 2 East Riding Rangers 1
The game was delayed with the University not having a pitch to play on.
When the game eventually got under-way it produced an evenly fought first half.
Rangers took the lead following a corner which was nudged home.
At this stage Rangers were in control but relinquished their advantage when they conceded from a deflected shot before the break.
The second half belonged to Bransholme with Rangers working hard to hold onto the point through a hard working defence and good goalkeeping.
In the end it was a free kick that separated the two sides, with Bransholme grabbing full points.
North Cave 3 Brandesburton 0
North Cave won all three points with a hard fought win over Brandesburton.
In an evenly contested first half it was Cave who ended it 1-0 to the good through a well taken goal from Barmby.
The second half was again pretty evenly contested but it was Cave who put the contest beyond doubt through two well taken goals by Gorman after good work from Hodson.
Scarborough Athletic Res 5 Long Riston 2
This was a much closer contest than the score line suggests.
Riston had the better of the opening exchanges and were unlucky not to take an early lead when they saw a shot hit the post.
They found themselves 1-0 down after eight minutes when the Riston defence stopped when a ball was put through to one of the Boro forwards in an offside position but failed to pick up a player coming from onside, who rounded Mark Baker in the Riston goal.
Scarborough doubled their lead 10 minutes later, when a speculative cross from their right wing was misjudged by Long Riston and it looped into the net at the far post.
Long Riston battled away and their efforts were rewarded when Lee Beach, on his debut for the Long Riston first team, cracked in a right foot shot from the edge of the 18-yard box.
Riston made it 2-2 on the half hour after both Beach and Gawthorpe had caused the home defence problems and Beach was on hand to score his second and the Riston equaliser.
The first half had one more twist when Pete Atkinson, at the heart of the Riston defence was caught in two minds with the ball at his feet and brought down a Boro attacker inside the penalty area, Boro duly scored from the spot kick.
The second half started off evenly but Scarborough scored their fourth when a scuffed shot dipped in front of the diving Riston keeper.
Scarborough's fifth came on 70 minutes when Mark Baker had come out to the edge of his box to punch a clearance, but the ball fell to a Boro player and the resulting challenge saw the ball loop high into the air only to drop just below the Riston bar.
Riston kept pressing and were unlucky not to get something out of the game when Gawthorpe and Beach both went close to scoring.
Withernsea 6 Inter Charter 1
The Seasiders hosted bottom club Inter Charter at a bitter Hull Road Playing Fields.
Having lost Medforth (work) and Dawson (work) through the week, the management opted to bring up Jamie Bassett for a place in the squad.
Mark Grainger joined Bassett on the bench as Withernsea set up in a 4-3-3 formation, Finn moved up front with Neilson and Simon Wilson.
Bentley dropped to right back, Westoby at left back and assistant Hardcastle and skipper Keyworth at centre half.
Wicks, Dunn and Sutton made up the three man midfield.
Withernsea got a hold of the game from the off, playing some tidy football throughout the back four.
It took about 15 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, a quickly taken throw-in from Simon Wilson caught Charter napping and after some good passing between Wilson and Finn the ball fell to Jimmy Neilson on the edge of the area, his placed shot rifled in off the post.
Wilson turned from provider to scorer bagging a quick-fire brace, two quality finishes from just inside the area, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance on each occasion.
It could have been more for Withernsea, Neilson's glancing header from a Simon Wilson corner went inches wide, Bentley fired not far over from distance and Dunn volleyed over from the edge of the area.
The next goal was stuck in by an unlikely goal scorer in Brad Keyworth following another flowing move; he caught the goalkeeper off guard by sticking his shot in the near corner when he was expecting a shot across goal or a cross.
Withernsea slowed down in the second period although Charter didn't really have any opportunities.
Withernsea extended their advantage when a quality move saw Dunn cross to Finn at the far post who pulled the ball back for Wicks to smash home.
Wicks then turned provider, and his provider turned scorer when from a free-kick the ball came to Wicks at the back post he pulled the ball back for Finn to slot into an empty net.
The disappointing thing was not keeping the clean sheet, with just a few minutes remaining a rare bit of poor play from Withernsea on the day saw Charter capitalise and score a consolation from close range.
