Pougher strikes for Tigers

Wednesday, September 09, 2009, 20:30

THE Hull Sunday League's season got under way with Boothferry Tigers entertaining Rapid Solicitors FC at Gower Road.

Straight from the kick off the match developed into a good entertaining game.

Boothferry got off to a good start when Pougher on the right put over a great cross which the Rapid keeper failed to hold and Lightowler darted in to slam the ball home for the opening goal.

Building on this early success Boothferry pushed forward and again it was Pougher who, with a great bit of skill, beat a defender and hit a tremendous shot from all of 25 yards out which beat the keeper and sailed into the top right hand corner of the net.

Rapid Solicitors then got their act together and started to play some very good football which brought its reward with a penalty that they converted to make it 2-1.

Boothferry were looking a little groggy at this time and some sloppy defending let in Rapid once more to bring the score level at 2-2.

However, the scoring was far from finished and just before the beak both teams scored again to make it 3-3 at half-time.

In the second half both teams settled down quickly with Boothferry mainly dominating the proceedings but the Rapid defence just refused to break until the 75th minute when once again man of the match Pougher struck to score his second and what turned out to be the winning goal .

Beverley United travelled to last season's Premier Division champions knowing the game was going to be tough.

After being beaten 5-1 twice by the Hull outfit last season the gulf was all too clear in two good games.

Beverley began brightly with new signing Andy Coverdale beating his man, before being brought down just inside the Roplas box.

Alan Laud stepped up and although his penalty was saved, he managed to get to the rebound first to give United the lead.

Beverley held the lead and looked good up until half-time when skipper Jon Ricardo was forced off with a groin injury.

The reshuffle saw Ben Whitehead drop in at left back as Beverley reverted back to a four-man defence.

Roplas, with the wind behind them, began to put the Beverley defence under lots of pressure with the long ball and began asking more questions of the united defence.

Beverley struck on the counter-attack and Laud put in a low fizzing cross for Danny Moore who somehow, despite managing to get his boot to the ball, saw it go narrowly wide of the target.

After regaining their composure Roplas began to build again and before long got their reward, Callum Dransfield scoring his first of the season after being allowed to much time and space in the Beverley box.

Dransfield then put his side in front, albeit after a cruel deflection.

Danny Clarke brought down a high ball and squared a pass to the edge of the area. Dransfield's shot looked easy pickings for Nicholson in the United goal but the ball struck a defender and left the goalie flat-footed as the ball rolled agonisingly to his left and into the goal.

The points were sealed as Dransfield celebrated his hat-trick.

O'Connell was caught in possession on the right hand side and Roplas struck at great pace on the counter to leave the score at 3-1.

Beverley did battle with substitute Luke Thompson teeing up Laud with a great chance but the ball didn't come down in time and Roplas defended their lead.

Kane Fenwick was outstanding controlled the pace of the game for a patched up Sutton Olympia.

Charlton got more than they deserved, the game was controlled completely by Sutton Olympia with Gareth Davies hitting the woodwork several times, having a shot cleared off the line and missing an open goal, the result didn't show how one sided the game really was !!
