Sheffield Tigers beat Driffield today (Saturday) so Hull Ionians play Sheffield Tigers away in round 2. Current information is that we play Tuesday night, believe 6pm ko - not sure how we get there for then in the rush hour! As Bradford & Bingley beat West Park today in the league, both the Bees and ourselves are now guarenteed to be playing National 3N next season. Are we going to give Yorkshire Cup a real go to finish the season on a high?

Sheffield Tigers were wound up to avenge their heavy defeat at Brantingham Park earlier in the year and their heavier pack made full use of home advantage and the heavy conditions to grind out a 20-14 victory. It's really about motivation wins the match and the cup has far more meaning to Tigers than Hull Ionians.

Ballbag, I couldn't make it. What team did we put out? It seems to me the Yorkshire Cup is a throwback to pre league days when it was an opportunity to play and sometimes give a bloody nose to some of the big boys on an evening. I saw a game at Cas in the 70's when they almost beat Riding and I remember Moortown beating Headingley 3-0 (exciting game?) about the same time.
So it has always meant more to some clubs than others.

We had a full squad of 1st XV players travelled to Sheffield. They produced a below par performance, but surely nobody is suggesting they turned up and deliberately played badly?
Ballbag - Supporting a team is a bit like marriage, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health; so the valliant few were there.

Further misquotes from R.S.Stevenson on supporting Ionians:-
Supporting Is is a step so grave and decisive that it attracts light headed, variable men by its very awfullness
Supporting Is is like life - that it is a field of battle and not a bed of Roses
Times are changed for him who follows Is, there are no more by- path meadows where you may innocently linger, but the road lies long and straight and dusty to the grave.
Have a nice day

There is a difference between following a team that tries but fails and a team that just turns up to make up the numbers. Webmasters last sentence makes it appear Ionians did the later. If that isn't the case then I think a better choice of words is needed. It just sounds arrogant and I'm sure that players who turned up and gave their all don't want people getting the wrong impression.

Quite right Cyril. Nobody goes out with the intention of playing badly. For those who are critical - think back to your playing days - did you always come off the pitch knowing you couldn't have done any better?
So give the lads big support for the last two games at 'Gate on Saturday and home to Caldy and hopefully let's finish the season in style.

How inspiring to have such an erudite and knowledgeable correspondent in Cyril50 on the forum. He makes logging on worthwhile.

Did anyone criticise the players? I have been critical of a comment that I thought was arrogant and disrespectful, both to Sheffield to the Ionians players who took the field. I didn't see the game so can hardly comment on what did or didn't happen but you'd hope that if the club don't care about the competition they would have the good grace to keep quiet about it on their public forum.

Well done Sheffield, enjoy Wharfedale next week.

Is the reason that you want to know the team so you can make judgements or have you a data base that needs updating?

The dark nights are over and soon the sun will be on your back and you can dream of Is topping the league next season.

Hey Ballbag I initially thought you were just being provocatiive, now I am convinced you are. In no way was my original statement intended to be arrogant or disrepectful of the players or teams involved I am still surprised you see it that way. It was merely a very brief report posted last night to let those interested know the result and give a brief insight as to why. In simple terms Sheffield Tigers in their match planning and preparation had clearly thought about how we demolished them with our backs at our ground last January and selected a team to win. They were very wound up and determined both on and off the field. Their next issue was we were the higher level side and this was their chance to prove they can match, if not beat us. To Sheffield progress in the Yorkshire Cup is the route to qualifying for the National Trophy next year, there are rewards for just getting through the first round or two. I suspect that their sponsor had also not made them do a full days hard work, a luxury we did not have. Players who have been hard at work all day and then travelled for an hour and half through rush hour traffic to get to a venue they have never been to before can not really be expected to have the same level of motivation that TIgers had.

Hiwebmaster you have given a lengthy explanation, but in the end it was your language and expression in your intial post which gave rise to the impression that you were being disparaging to both Tigers and the players from I's who took the field. In future maybe think before you commit to comment!

Why so much shock when a quick visit to the Tigers website would have indicated how up for it they were.
Surely a chance was missed to blood some of the younger players that have been mentioned on previous threads as having been so instrumental in the HAWKS games this year, and yet have been nowhere near the 1st team.
Whilst these players have never been named one of them must be the young forward who has played in every position in the front row, second row and back row and is one of the leading try scorers despite having sat out for six weeks for an unjustified red card.
Regular training attendance and travels back to play even when the Uni are on vacation.
Its no use talking about signing young new players if we don"t look after the talent we have got

Interesting last line from after_yyys about young players who we don't appear to be looking after, buying in and not giving chances in the first team. Perhaps I could invite you to watch a first team home game which includes the likes of Ferguson, Green, Ulliot, Donkin, Girkin, Birch, Rive, Longbone etc. etc. All home grown talent. Reet Yorkshire lads !Shall I go on ?
If you can't make Saturday come down on a Sunday morning to view teams from the 250 mini junior players we have registered which we as a whole club (I say whole club because I am not one of these us and them merchants) look after week in week out. Or maybe the second team who have a plethora (I will explain this if you don't know what it means) of yonungsters who are being groomed by our unsung heros the second team management.
One final offer. Come to the AGM and when the accounts are circulated ask the question "Why all these payments for buying in young players ?" Save your breath - there won't be any ! - but you are welcome to the AGM anyway.[/u][/b]

Birch - Driffield
Girking - Bridlington

just a little correction.

It seems to me that the point being made is that they didn't take Kyle Hall on Tuesday and to that list I'd add 2nd team players player of the year, Rob Owen, given that the only back on the bench was Birchy from what I hear. However, I'm not about to start debating whether its a case of faces not fitting or not because I have no idea if either was available.

I think its a shame we got knocked out given that the point was made on Saturday that it was the clubs only chance of winning anything this season and we seem to have not done ourselves justice. You'd hope we weren't just going through the motions but it is that time of year if you're not involved in the action at either end of the table.

I accept that a number of players have gained promotion to the 1st however I was picking up on the point that one of the management of the hawks made that the good results have been brought about on the efforts of a small number of players who have never been near the the 1st.
Now ask yourself how do you think these players feel after giving everything to the cause.
I only hope that we are grooming for Ionians future and not for others.
