Thinking man's course for any weather

DESCRIBED as "a thinking man’s course", Brough Golf club offers a challenging par 68 course for top amateur players without being too daunting for those carrying higher handicaps.

The course is attractive, with good golfing qualities that makes it a pleasure to play all year round, in any weather.

The Victorian clubhouse provides an elegant home for Brough’s golfers, giving the club much of its personality and allowing golfers to relax in its seductive charms.

the quality of the course has led to the club becoming host to a number of Championship and Representative matches and has hosted the Forte PGA Seniors Championship in 1990, as well as the British Girls’ Championship in 2001.

Much time and money has been invested into Brough Golf Club to make sure it keeps its reputation.

they included tee enlargement, the repositioning and reshaping of bunkers and a radical tree felling and replanting programme to enhance the landscape.

A state-of-the-art irrigation system has also been installed, allowing the course to be played in all weather on its dry, well-drained land.

A seemingly gentle opener with a green close to out of bounds is followed by the threat of the stream throughout the par four second.

Hole three is the only par five of the course, making you work over 500 yards, before reaching a par four fourth with concealed green and dog-leg fairway.

A downhill fifth and short sixth brings up a seventh bordered by trees left and the stream right. The eighth mirrors the first for deceiving simplicity.

The trees at the short ninth channel the ball toward a sloping green, and a long 10th cause trouble.

a par four 11th needs a long drive before a raised tee at the 12th presents an intimidating avenue of trees. A short 13th leads to the "easiest par four on the course" before a winding 15th that demands a long straight drive.

The troublesome 16th has a raised green and a drop-away fairway and the stream on the "entertaining" 17th seems to surround each shot.

The par four 18th has a dog-leg to the left and trees to the right, leading to a sloping green for the finish.

this course is challenging but ultimately rewarding.
