Bulls' unbeaten run ended

Wednesday, March 10, 2010, 07:10

SKIRLAUGH Bulls lost their unbeaten record at Oulton Raiders, going down 28-26 in the National Cup quarter-finals.

The Bulls raced into a 16-0 lead after only 20 minutes thanks to a try hat-trick from centre Jack Sheppardson and a try from Tom Stark.

All four went unconverted, which proved very costly.

Oulton rallied and at half-time the score was 16-10 in favour of the Bulls.

Within three minutes of the start of the second half it was 16-16.

To cap off a fantastic game Sheppardson scored this fourth try from a scoot which was converted by Brad Nelson-Gurtchen.

The home side showed great spirit and scored a converted try on 40 minutes.

With only eight minutes left, Elliot Kerry scored in the corner, which made the score 26-22 in favour of Skirlaugh.

With only two minutes to go Oulton gathered the ball on the halfway line, ran at a tired Skirlaugh defence and touched down in the corner.

This was converted to make the final score 28-26.

AFTER being called off on the previous two occasions Myton Warriors and Hull Isberg locked horns in a much-awaited game.

Myton took the lead in the 10th minute with a converted try.

For another 15 minutes both teams battled hard with outstanding defence from Isberg led by Aiden Gardner and David Wardle.

Isberg forced a mistake on half way, and from the scrum Adrian Batey took the ball, beat off three would-be tacklers and ran 30 metres to score under the sticks. James Pinder converted for 6-6.

Myton responded with a converted try four minutes later.

With quick hands from the ruck off Liam Ford, Charlie Bailey drew the defence and passed to Brynlee Raven who scored out wide. With Bailey missing the conversion it was 12-10 to Myton at half-time.

The second half was much the same with Isberg debutants Michael Campbell and Ben Anderson proving a handful for the Myton defence, but Myton scored first again with an unsuccessful conversion pushing the lead to 16-10.

However, Isberg equalised again when Pinder passed to Bailey and Bailey put a high cross-field kick over the heads of the Myton defence for Chapman to collect in goal and score.

Pinder converted for 16-16, but a lapse in defence allowed Myton to score out wide.

Close to full-time, Isberg made a mistake, turning the ball over to Myton who pressed hard for a try to finish the game off, but sound defence work from Wardle, Bailey, Gardner and Raven kept them at bay.

Myton tried hard to stop the Isberg attack, only allowing them to gain 10 metres in two tackles.

However, on the third Batey took the ball from the ruck, danced his way through the defence and raced 70 metres to score. With Bailey converting Isberg took the lead for the first time 22-20.

With a few minutes left, both teams played their hearts out, but there was no further scoring.
