FORMER Hull KR star Stanley Gene admitted his award to mark his departure from Super League came completely out of the blue.

Gene was honoured at the annual Man of Steel awards night last night after spending the last nine years playing at the highest level.

The 35-year-old will drop down into the Championship after signing a two year deal for Halifax last week after scoring 50 tries in 179 Super League appearances.

The utility player, who is the only player to have played in the last three World Cups, said he was honoured to be recognised by the RFL.

"I'm very honoured and humble to receive this special award," Gene told the Mail.

"I never thought I'd get to play in Super League for as long as I did.

"During my time in England I have played for some great coaches, with some great players in some great teams.

"Nothing lasts for ever and my time in Super League has come to an end.

"I've enjoyed every minute of my time in Super League and I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me along the way.

"I'd like to thank Neil Hudgell for giving me the chance to come back to Rovers when they won promotion.

"Rovers will always be a part of me and I hope I will always be a part of Rovers."
