Alliance events hit by weather

Saturday, February 06, 2010, 06:30

THREE local Alliance events were lost to the freezing conditions in the past 10 days.

The main event to suffer was the Humber Alliance at Bridlington Links on Friday, January 29, when with most of the field of 100 golfers still out on the course a prolonged snow flurry led to the event being abandoned.

Chris Gray, the Alliance Secretary, had struggled manfully to get the event completed with players riding out two 10-minute snow showers in the morning.

However, a 30-minute flurry blanketed the course with snow, rendering further play impossible.

All players had their entry fees refunded and this fixture is now lost to the calendar due to non-availability of an alternative date before the end of the season.

The Scarborough & District Alliance event scheduled for the following day at Bridlington (Belvedere) Golf Club was also cancelled and has also had to be lost to the calendar.

The third event to fall victim of the weather was the East Riding & District of Yorkshire Alliance at Easingwold.

This event will now be held on Wednesday, February 10.

DRIFFIELD Golf Club member Julie Edeson recently recorded her first hole in one.

Edeson, who has been playing golf for three years and has a handicap of 36, secured the ace on the second hole of her home course.

Normally a par four, the hole was much reduced in length due to winter conditions with a temporary tee and green, but nevertheless using a driver and a pink ball given to her by her husband, it was a fantastic achievement.
