Alarm bells ring for Humberside

Friday, November 27, 2009, 06:00

THE sudden appearance of four fire engines and accompanied fire fighters had the effect of dousing Humberside youth team's hopes of beating Nottinghamshire in the Northern Youth Association Central Division.

The two teams were happily having pre-match practice at the Brownies Bar venue when the fire alarm rang and they were ushered onto Anlaby Road.

Most dressed in only their flimsy team shirts were left shivering in the cold for an hour before the firemen gave the all-clear to return.

The kitchen, however, was out of action for the afternoon and both teams suffered from the trauma, but it appeared to affect Humberside the most, and they lost the match 8-7, their first-ever defeat by Notts.

They could not get their act together and the under-18s were beaten 4-3 and the women 2-1 before the under-21s won 3-2.

It started badly when the under-18s went down, though Chris Lowthorpe was outstanding with a 2-0 win.

The 15-year-old Winifred Holtby pupil was man-of-the-match with a super 28.76 average.

Lewis Fisher (2-0) won his third match in a row and Rob Thompson won by the same score.

The women lost 2-1 with only 20-year-old Beeford shop assistant Naomi Marsland a 2-0 winner.

The men's under 21 were 1-0 down when Matt Wadforth lost and they needed to win all four of their last games for the overall points.

Alan Smirk won 2-0 and man-of-the-match Joe Lickiss, a 19-year-old joiner, also won 2-0 with a 23.86 average.

It was his third win out of three and meant an overall win was still a possibility.

Jason Applegate then gave an heroic performance to pull back his game to 1-1 with a 70 finish and then hit a maximum 180 in the third leg but the 18-year-old unfortunately lost 2-1 and with it the bonus points.

This made the last game academic but Reece Robinson nevertheless won 2-0.

And that was not the end of the Robinson story for his 10-year-old brother Keiran, from Adelaide Primary School, then won the reserve competition to put himself in with a chance of a debut in the match against Derbyshire at Brownies Bar on Sunday, December 13.

With other results yet to arrive Humberside are temporarily top of the table.

League table: Humberside 3, 24; Notts 3, 23; Derbyshire 2, 22; Warwicks 2, 21; Leicester 2, 19; Lincs 2, 10.

HANKEY HOME DEBUT: BDO world champion Ted Hankey makes his Hull debut when joining the Humberside team against Pembrokeshire in the British League Division Four on December 5-6 at the Cavalier Club.

Hankey made a surprise appearance in the away game at Shropshire, in his home town of Telford, and registered a 3-0 win.

A capacity crowd is expected at the Cavalier Club not only for the appearance of the world champion but also because Humberside are currently top of Division Four and Pembrokeshire are second.

Hankey is pressing for a return to the England team and to do so he must play six games for a county team.

His first saw an impressive 3-0 win and a 28.36 average which places him seventh in the top averages.

Humberside's Justin Hobson is fourth on 29.44 and Pembrokeshire's Winmau World Youth Master Jamie Lewis is fourth on 29.49.

Pembrokeshire also include current world women's number three Julie Gore, who is top of the rankings with 24.59.

Team-mate Hayley Francis-Owens is eighth on 19.81.

Humberside women are flying high in the rankings with Wendy Dearing fifth on 20.88, Christine Readhead sixth on 20.67, and Karen Helmore seventh on 19.87. Maureen Herrington is 11th 19.28.

In the women's B section Sue Bilby is fifth on 19.25 and Lynn Gilham sixth on 18.40

Humberside men's B are currently leading their table with Ray Symington seventh on 26.75 and Lee Blakey ninth on 26.59.

ELECTRODARTS MERIT LEAGUE: The grand final of the Electrodarts Merit Table at Ideal Standard on December 9 will include the top 32.

Steve Tranmer is the league champion, having collected 55 points.

He is followed by Ben Malton (45), Peter Marshall and Stuart Jennings (34), who will all be seeded for the grand final.

Also qualified are Tony Richardson, Leon Bailey, Jamie Owens, Reece Robinson, Alan Burgess, Jim Adams, Lewis Kirk, Darren Coates, Gavin Thompson, Matt Wadforth, Charlie Richardson, Steve Trevett, Kevin Mooney, Make Atkinson, Trevor Holtby, Kevin Screeton, Terry Lickiss, Roly Robinson, Brian Taylor, Rob Kerrison, John Winder, Dave Taylor, John Swales, Adam Brown, Dave Revell, Jason Brown, Mick Nixon, Phil Lloyd, Dave Ladley.
